TAIPEI–Taiwan’s Agriculture and Food Agency said that consumers in Taiwan should try to obtain as much information as possible about agricultural products on the market and can do by using a traceability system that was introduced last year.

By scanning the barcodes on the packages of certain agricultural products, shoppers can see the address and telephone numbers of the producers and in some cases, view laboratory test reports on the products, the agency said in a statement.

Since April 2015 when the system was introduced, some 9,169 sets of traceability QR codes have been issued for products in 409 categories, including rice, vegetables, fruits and processed agricultural products, the agency said.

It said shoppers are encouraged, therefore, to use their smartphones to scan the barcodes and thus obtain information about the origin of the products.

The traceability system is part of the government’s efforts to improve the safety and quality of agricultural products in the country and provide more information to consumers, the agency said.
