FDA to Keep Close Watch over COSTCO’s Disposal of the Recalled Peanut Butter

2012/10/30

Food and Drug Administration (FDA) stated that Sunland Inc., a U.S. company, announced on September 24, 2012 a voluntary recall of its almond butter and peanut butter products produced during the period from May 1 to September 24, 2012 for suspected contamination of Salmonella. Through investigation, it was found that the products concerned had not been imported to Taiwan.

Furthermore, a recent announcement of Sunland Inc. pointed to an expanded recall of all products produced after March 1, 2010 as a preventive measure. It was found that since 2010 COSTCO has imported 8 lots (about 17,509 kg) of “555000 KIRKLAND SIGNATURE organic peanut butter imported from the US”, which were produced within the specified period for the expanded recall. COSTCO said that the products concerned have been sold out and no inventory is in stock now. Although no report of physical discomfort due to consumption of such products has been received from consumers, COSTCO will voluntarily inform its members who had purchased the products in writing of the option of returning the products to the stores for destruction. FDA will closely keep an eye on the follow-up disposal of the products after the recall and would like to advise consumers who have purchased the relevant products to contact COSTCO immediately.
